Songs About Cats (or are they?)

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

Perhaps the most famous Cat Song is The Siamese Cat Song recorded by Peggy Lee. The song is from the Walt Disney 1955 classic The Lady and The Tramp , an animated film about a classy Cocker Spaniel named Lady who falls for Tramp a scamp of a mongrel. The song however is about two arrogant cats, Si and Am, who have given Siamese cats a bad name ever since.

The Siamese Cat Song was penned by Lee along with Sonny Burke and over the years has also been recorded by Freddie and The Dreamers, Mitch Miller, Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin, Haylie Duff, and Bobby McFerrin. We are Siamese if you please, We are Siamese if you don’t please.

Both The Turtles and Petula Clark stepped into recording studios to make very different versions of The Cat in the Window, a song that compares a cat trying to get out of a window with the singer wanting to fly away. There’s a cat in the window, and he’s watching all the birds go passing by, he’d love to fly out the window, go where the wind goes, and so would I.

Who can forget the Muppets recording of The Cat Came Back, a song about a kitty that just kept finding its way back no matter how far it was taken from home. But the cat came back, she wouldn’t stay away, she was sitting on the porch the very next day.

In 1950 folks were flooding into record stores and asking for I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat. Mel Blanc recorded the song, written by Alan Livingston, Billy May and Warren Foster, about the cartoon cat and canary duo Sylvester and Tweety. I tawt I taw a puddy tat a creeping up on me, I did I taw a puddy tat as plain as he could be.

The Rooftop Singers followed up their 1963 number one hit Walk Right In, with Tom Cat a ditty about ‘Ringtail Tom’ who liked to go strutting round the town And when he steps out all the other cats in the neighborhood they begin to shout. Fast forward to 1981 and the Stray Cats record a musically different song but with a very similar theme, the rockabilly Stray Cat Strut. Stray cat strut, I’m a ladies’ cat, a feline Casanova, hey man, that’s where it’s at, get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man, get my dinner from a garbage can.

Norma Tanega apparently owned a cat that she named ‘Dog’ and liked to take that cat for walks, hence her 1966 hit Walking My Cat Named Dog, which does seem to be about her real life experience of strolling around town with her pet feline.

Most songs though that include the word Cat in the tile, are not truly about cats at all. A great example is the fine song, Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. No cats make an appearance in this song; instead the lyrics contain a very chilling message that every dad should pay heed too.

Bent Fabric, real name Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, had a hit in 1962 with Alley Cat, but this was an instrumental recording so it’s not a song about cats. Instrumental too was Aaron Copeland’s The Cat and the Mouse.

Cat People (Putting Out Fire) by David Bowie was recorded for the 1982 remake of the film Cat People. Great dark and menacing feel to the song but the words have no relationship to cats.

The cat in The Cat Crept In, recorded by Mud was actually a girl, as was the cat featured in The Rolling Stones’ Stray Cat Blues, this one with exceedingly sharp claws.

They Call Her the Cat, by Elton John is about, well it’s not about cats! Neither is Honky Cat, another Elton tune, that one is about a country boy moving to live life in the city.

Three Cool Cats, is a song that was first recorded by the Coasters in 1958 and covered by The Beatles in 1962 (but not released until 1995.) Of course this song is not about cats, but about three teenage boys and three teenage girls. The Beatles also recorded Little Willie John’s Leave My Kitten Alone, no surprise to find that the song is not about a kitten.

U2 recorded a song titled An Cat Dubh, which apparently means The Black Cat in Gaelic, no cat in the song though, black or otherwise.

No cats are in Year of the Cat by Al Stewart, Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent, The Lovecats by The Cure or in Cool for Cats by Squeeze. Who can say what The Cat’s In the Well by Bob Dylan is about?

There must be countless other songs that have the words Cat, or Cats, in the title but are not actually about our feline friends. No doubt there are more songs that are about cats than those listed on this page, but those songs sadly seem few and far between.

But wait . . . wasn’t there a stage musical all about cats. Cats, the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, was first shown in London, England in 1981. Based upon T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats the show features song after song about . . . Old Gumbie, Grizabella, Mungojerrie And Rumpelteazer, Skimbleshanks, Old Deuteronomy, Gus, Macavity, and Mr. Mistoffelees. All of these characters are, of course, . . . Cats.

Larry Chamberlain lives in London, England, and has had a lifelong fascination with domestic cats. His web site www.best-cat-art.com http://www.best-cat-art.com provides information about all that is best in cat art. Also pages about cat and kitten care and information on cat breeds and types.

Spyware, Adware, And The Importance Of Cleaning The Registry

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

It is important to remove any trace of Spyware from the system registry. This can be achieved with the help of registry cleaner software.

‘Adware’ is a term that is frequently used to describe software that downloads and resides in the system and displays ‘pop-up’ advertisements on the screen. There are many sites that allow users to download programs free of cost in return for permission for adware to installed on their system. This permission is, however, hidden somewhere in the ‘terms and conditions’ or ‘agreement’ the user agrees to at the time of downloading the software. Adware is also known as Spyware without the malicious streak. It just monitors the users activity on the Internet and the type of software the user uses on the computer. These non-malicious Spyware do, however, affect the smooth functioning of the computer by slowing down the system greatly and must be detected and removed. This can be done with the help of anti-Adware or anti-Spyware in addition the registry must also be cleaned of any entries of the software with the aid of free Spyware Adware removal software.

Spyware With Malicious Intent

Spyware is Adware with malicious content. They operate in much the same way. However, Spyware actually spy’s on the user of a computer. Every time the user enters personal details such as credit card information or his username and password the Spyware will record the information and mail it to its masters. This information can be used to fraudulently cause financial damage to the user of the computer the Spyware is installed on. The registry of a computer proactively upgrades the information and data in its records. Every thing that happens on the computer is registered in the registry. This means that the Spyware is also entered in the registry as well and in hundreds of places too. These entries can only be removed effectively with free Spyware removal software such as free Microsoft Spyware Adware removal tool or the famous Yahoo Spyware Adware removal tool.

Spyware Removal Utility Is Not Enough

Spyware, being designed to covertly install and operate on a system makes it very difficult to detect. One of the main indicators of the presence of Spyware on the system is the slowing of the system or ‘pop-up’ advertisements. In order to collect data and send it to an email address through the Internet, Spyware must pause other programs already running. This is the reason the system slows. Removing Spyware using anti-Spyware tools is not enough because Spyware expects such action and so installs links in different parts of the registry as well. To remove these links from the registry one must use special Spyware removal programs. Many Free Spyware removal tools do a good job efficiently cleaning the registry and remove all traces of Spyware.

My Hobby Farm

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

When the wind is blowing up a dust storm and it never looks like a decent rain will ever come, I can’t help but wonder why I bought this hobby farm. The mood does quickly turn however- on waking to a nice clear day full of promise everything feels rosy once again.

Coming from the land always helps when deciding to buy a plot of land, but a love of nature is essential. Not having a good knowledge of farming means much more homework is needed, but these obstacles can be overcome. Having lots of friends and a practical nature will enable you to overcome the problems which seem to be an everyday aspect of running a hobby farm.

I bought my farm in order to enjoy my lifelong passion for growing plants-especially fruit and vegetables. There is also the health aspect resulting from lots of exercise and of course a chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. The seasons become clearer and the senses are certainly sharpened by the ever-changing colours, aromas and sounds.

Learning some of the fine details of plant propagation has always been a topic of interest. Some of the most interesting information has been obtained from older migrants who spent most of their lives on vineyards and orchards. Meeting and conversing with other gardeners and like minded people about their successes and failures also helps to get things into perspective.

In case you may be thinking there is money to be made from a hobby farm, think again. Most hobby farms being relatively small are inefficient and will cost much more to maintain than any likely earnings. Profits can me made with lots of dedication and a hard nosed approach towards a business, but much care and research will be needed in order to achieve this aim.

If you have decided to buy your own piece of paradise, I believe you can expect a journey with many ups and downs and lots of unexpected turns.

Wishing you all the best in your venture.

Back Up Your Important Data

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

Businesses require both security and data backup to run efficently and productively. Many business owners want to save money and scrimp on data backup protection then get stuck with lost data and valuable time. Here’s a case in point that happened within the last two weeks before the holidays last year.

I’ll simply call them client A. Client A runs a business that survives on shipping their product out through UPS. When we first met back in the early spring it was to fix the shipping computer. He had installed an anti-virus program and it wiped out his e-mail in box.

This is a known bug with MaCAFEE anti-virus and it was a matter of a simple file recovery. In the process of fixing that problem we found other problems and the system was acting very un-stable and nothing was backed up. At that point and several others through the year I tried to encourage him to back up his important records.

Well guess what, he never did and a week before the holiday it crashed. Suddenly he couldn’t access UPS, couldn’t access his mailing lists and postage. Essentially he was out of business with a warehouse full of employees sitting around. Now he is losing thousands of dollars a day because he was trying to save a few hundred and put off getting a back-up device, the business owner went into shear panic and called us.

Now just as suddenly he tried to put the responsibility of saving his business on us, if we couldn’t recover his data he was out of business. I wouldn’t accept that responsibility. We will do our very best, we will do everything possible to fix the situation but if the data was lost it was his fault for not backing it up. People, things happen, so if it is the least bit important … BACK IT UP.

Fortunately, we were able to save about 90% of his data and get him running but it took 3 days and cost him thousands. Did he get a back-up device, not yet. This is the one single problem we run into and it comes in many forms. My inbox became corrupted and all my e-mails are gone, can you recover them ? Were they backed up, no. Address books, family photos, your accounting records, what ever it may be, if it is the least bit important, BACK IT UP. If you are a business and your data is mission critical, BACK IT UP.

If it is a bad crash and we have to send it out for professional data recovery, I’ve seen bills as high as $12 thousand dollars. Data recovery can become expensive, not to mention the down time involved. So make sure to purchase a backup device that automatically backs up your important data every day. If you need data recovery, visit Computer Guys Live online for affordable recovery services.

5 Top Things That Cause Your Insomnia

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

Millions of people out there suffer from insomnia almost every night. Many are trying to cure it with drugs. Why should you use drugs if you can find the causes and manage to overcome them?

Yes, there are some simple solutions that you can try. You only need to find the cause, and, zap! You can cure your insomnia almost effortlessly.

Here are some top causes:

• Your bed room

Is it messy? Is it too crowded? Did you choose a calm color of wallpaper or paint?

Yes, all should be put into considerations.

Sleeping is a process to relax your body. And, you can never get relaxed if you’re not comfortable with the condition of your bedroom.

• Your bed

Make sure that both the bed and pillow are comfortable and clean. Remember, it will be hard for you to shut your eyes if you’re not comfortable.

Also, avoid doing other activities than sleeping in your bed. If you’ve been watching TV while lying in your bed, you’d better stop it. That might be the cause of your insomnia. It’s better to move the TV out of your bedroom.

Bed should only associates to sleep, not to other activities.

• Clocks

How come a clock can cause insomnia? You might ask.

Let’s see it this way. You’re having an exam or job interview tomorrow and of course, you wouldn’t want to be late for that.

So, before sleeping you go checking you clock placed on the table next to your bed, once. Then, you check it out again. That makes it twice. And again, and again. Not only it takes too much of your sleeping time, but it also adds to your nerves.

Stress will avoid you from sleeping. So, put your clock somewhere else.

• Too many thoughts

If your mind goes to several directions such as jobs, family, health, etc, you’ll never be able to get yourself relaxed.

Try to avoid thinking too much when you already get in your bed. To help, you can count sheep.

Yes, that might sound silly but it helps you get your mind into one single direction. Soon, you’ll be sleepy and close your eyes.

Just try and prove it.

• Alcohol

The alcohol works as a stimulant and regardless of how tight you close your eyes or how deeply you long for sleep, it doesn’t happen.

The way to avoid alcohol induced insomnia is to either not drink in the evening or choose a drink that works to relax you instead of stimulate you.

If those are the things that cause your insomnia, follow all the tips to get a good night sleep. I believe, soon, you’ll be sleeping like a baby.

Have a nice sleep!

How To Choose A Saltwater Aquarium

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

Saltwater aquariums can be a very nice and exotic addition to your décor. Be warned though they require a bit more upkeep and maintenance than other aquariums but the array of beautiful aquatic life for a saltwater environment are well worth it. There are various types of aquariums to choose from ranging in different shapes, sizes and materials.

Your selection of material might be what you want to give first consideration to when choosing one that is right for you. You have two options in the way of material for your aquarium the first one to consider is obviously glass. Glass is the more inexpensive choice and also the easiest to clean as well. Acrylic is your other choice. Acrylic provides better visibility than glass and is also the stronger material. Another benefit of acrylic aquariums is that they come in many different sizes and shapes that may be a little more interesting with your home décor. Both materials have there advantages and you need to choose which one is more suitable to your needs.

Size of your aquarium is another very important decision to make. A large aquarium is of course the more dramatic effect then a smaller one. Also it allows you to have more fish and more room for them to swim around in and that would be better for the fish’s quality of life. But also consider if you have too many fish in your large tank then you are defeating that purpose of a better environment for them. Larger aquariums also are more expensive and require more care and cleaning from you.

The most fun you will have will definitely be adding the fish to your new aquarium. Saltwater fish come in many very attractive breeds and when you are shopping for them you will need to learn what they need to survive in their new home such as, how much space they need and other factors. Probably the best thing to do would be to shop around for the fish first to see which kinds are appealing to you and then you will know what kind of aquarium best suits your needs.

Another important consideration is the weight of your aquarium when full. Decide if the table or stand that you plan to place it upon is strong and sturdy enough to withstand the weight. Many people like to build aquariums into their walls so if you decide to do that make sure the wall is able to hold the total weight.

Google Knock Me Almost Senseless… then I struck Back

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

It felt as if Google had beaten me senseless, and almost penniless. Well, not really penniless, but I wasted quite some money on Google Adwords. In a short time Adwords gobbled up a big chunk of the budget I saved up to use for targeted traffic to my site. I got traffic, but at I made no money. It was quite demoralizing to see my account at Adwords dwindle while my Clickbank revenue remained static.

Then I stumbled upon a book called Beating Adwords. It intrigued me, since it felt as if the only one who made money was Google, and I felt beaten. It was one of the best books I ever bought. It was a bit expensive, especially for someone who already went way over budget, but I am glad I took the chance. This book I written by two very experienced online Marketers and I learned from them some of the best techniques to improve my Adwords campaigns. Yes, they still cost money, but after following the advice in Beating Adwords, I started making money again. What a wonderful feeling to see my Clickbank revenue climbing faster than my Google Adwords account can fall. Beating Adwords gave me the power to fight back and for the first time in quite some time it feels as if I am winning this fight again.

Do you also know how it feels to struggle making money with your Adwords Campaigns? Id you haven’t tried Beating Adwords yet, I would suggest you give it a try… maybe you will also experience the elation of turning a losing campaign into a profit making campaign. Following their advice, you will learn to use keywords to improve your CTR, how to improve your ads and only use the most effective ads and lots more. If you are serious about making money being an affiliate, then this book is for you.

The book is divided in a few sections teaching you all you need to know. The first section gives you a very good introduction into pay per click advertising and affiliate marketing. The second section will take you step by step through the process of setting up your own adwords account, which is very helpful for beginners. From the third section the book gets down to the nitty-gritty of using adwords. How to determine which programs can be marketed profitable and what tools will help you make money. Personally the fourth section was the best part for me. In this section they help me to reduce unwanted traffic and this great section helped me cut down on my adword cost. But the biggest problem with adwords is that you are up against some fierce competition and section five helps you to take them on, and lots of practical advice is given.

That is just a taste of some of the sections in this excellent book. I would really recommend this book. If you have been beating by adwords, or are planning to start using adwords, get this book now and start hitting back.

Peppermint Sweets Gift

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

At Christmas time we all like to indulge in rich foods, such as Christmas pudding and Christmas Cake, sweets and candy. During the Second World War when food was rationed, children went without sweets. Sugar was rationed to 8oz (225g) per person per month. Sugar is the main ingredient of sweets, which is why they were so scarce and why they became a luxury item.

To make peppermint sweets you will need…

12 tablespoons of icing sugar
1 egg white
green food colouring (optional)
peppermint flavouring and cooking chocolate.

Remember to wash your hands and clean the work surfaces before you begin.

Method…

Add to a bowl the icing sugar, egg white, 4 drops of peppermint flavouring and 12 drops of green food colouring. Mix well and kneed the mixture to form a smooth ball. If the mixture is a little too wet add more icing sugar.

Roll the ball into a large sausage and slice into individual sweets. Use your hands to shape the sweets and leave them on a chopping board to dry.

Melt the chocolate in a dish in the microwave, it will only need a minute or two. Don’t over do it, it just needs enough time to melt. If you do not have a microwave, you may need an adult to help. Stand a mixing bowl inside a pan of boiling water on the hob, keep the water simmering. Don’t let any water bubble over the side and into the chocolate because this spoils the chocolate. Be careful not to let the pan boil dry.

Dip each sweet into the chocolate half way, and leave it on some tinfoil until the chocolate sets.

To package your home made sweets you could buy a small metallic gift box or gift bag, or you could bundle the sweets in paper napkins tied up with ribbon or tinsel, these look a bit like mini Santa sacks.

A perfect Christmas gift for someone with a sweet tooth.

Computer No Longer Fast?

October 12th, 2008 by opentoeshoes1647

Ahh…Remember that first day you brought your computer home, plugged everything in, it was a beautiful site, it was fast, web pages loaded quickly and programs launched within seconds or faster. But after a few months or weeks things began to slow down, and you think oh man what a piece of *@&* this thing only lasted a month. Let’s take a look at what happened.

Disk Drive Clutter

What you may not have realized is that in all that time you were surfing the net and downloading programs installing, and uninstalling software, is that in all that time junk has been building up on your hard drive, temporary internet files, software that you tried but did not like, but never bothered to uninstall, emails from friends and family, that are sitting in your inbox and sent items. All that junk is slowing down your computer.

When you’re hard drive becomes cluttered it begins to slow down. Your computer performance is degraded substantially. The more files you have stored on your hard drive the more they get scattered and fragmented, which in turn slows down how fast programs respond to your clicks. Think about your hard drive as a huge filing cabinet, when all the files are neatly organized and labeled, it is easy to find what you are looking for, but take that same filing cabinet and dump it all over the ground, it well take longer to find that certain file or folder that you were looking for. A computers hard drive is the same way, as files become fragmented your computer takes more time to gather the correct files and execute your commands.

In addition the more files you have fragmented the less space on your hard drive your computer has, resulting in less virtual memory. That open area or unused space on the hard drive is used as virtual memory by your computer, if you have limited free disk space for data swapping your computer will become sluggish and slow to respond to commands, so keep your hard drive clean and remove or uninstall any programs or files that you don’t need and you will see a marked difference in the way your computer performs.

There are five major factors that contribute to a computers performance

1. The type of processor you have in your computer. Not all processors are created equal. Budget brand or bargain brand processors such as the Intel Celeron or the AMD Duron are lower end processors. If you want a high performance computer stay away from the lower end processors.

2. Along with processors type comes with the maximum available cache in a processor. The large cache a CPU has the less time it needs to access the computer memory.

3. Front side bus, once again the larger or faster a computer front size bus is the better a computer will perform. The front side bus is what carries all the data between the CPU and all the devices on board the computers motherboard.

4. Hard Drive, once again it comes down to speed, typically most home PC’s will have either a 5800rpm hard drive or a 7200rpm hard drive. The faster the hard drives spins the faster the CPU can access data on the hard drive.

5. And finally memory. The quality and performance of computer memory or RAM has increase significantly the past couple of years. DDR RAM set in channels of the computers mother board has substantially increased the speed and performance of today’s computers. With that said, the more memory you have the better your computer will perform. However there is a point where too much memory becomes just a waste of money. If you are a gamer you can probably never have too much memory, but if you use your computer for web surfing and email, 256-512MB is plenty good on a Windows XP machine.
